And while some elements of the gardening calendar have likely been thrown off, following are some of the

For lawn care in Asheville, Hendersonville, Fairview and Fletcher areas this month, it’s best to check with the professionals here at Meadows Lawn Care Inc. for what’s the best lawn fertilize and weed control strategies are given the unusually warm weather. And, of course, we’re here to help with all your landscaping and lawn mowing needs from Enka and Biltmore Lakes to Biltmore Park and across the rest of Buncombe and Henderson Counties.

Plants that usually flower in April include the Dogwood, Redbud, Flowering Cherry, Lilac, Crabapple, Carolina Silverbell, Dogwood, viburnum, Spirea, Carolina Rhododendron, Piedmont Azalea, Sweet Shrub, Banks Rose, Columbine Wisteria, Periwinkle, Candytuft, Violets, Jack-In-The-Pulpit,Trillium, Bloodroot and Bleeding Heart.

April is a choice time for gardeners to transplant azaleas since it’s easy to group the plants according to flower color.

In the way of bush, hedge and shrub trimming and pruning here in the Asheville and Hendersonville area, it’s recommended to prune spring-flowering plants like lilac, fortsythia, wegela, azalea and spirea after flowers have faded. Trimming shrubs like holly and pyracantha while flowering will help maintain a crop of berries.

Recommended tree work in April includes tree trimming of flowering trees like flowering cherry, redbud and Bradford pear, cutting away any winter damage.

April is also the time for spraying landscape shrubs for pests. And, of course, we offer professional pest management services for all your landscaping in our extended service area that includes Asheville, Arden, Biltmore Lakes, Biltmore Forest, Candler, Enka, Fletcher, Hendersonville, Skyland, Enka and all the way to Maggie Valley. A few if the insects we spray for include euonymus-scale, azalea-lace bug, hemlock and boxwood-leaf miner, hybrid rhododendron-borer, and juniper-spruce mites.

Most people don’t give much thought to grass, but if they did, they’d know:

Grass is green in more ways than one. For instance, a 50×50-foot area of grass produces enough oxygen to meet the breathing needs of a family of four. At the same time, it’s also absorbing the enemies of good air like ozone, hydrogen fluoride, carbondioxide, and perosyacetyle nitrate (you can say that again).

Lawns are cool. An average healthy lawn has the same cooling power as an 8.5-ton capacity air conditioner (most home units have a 3-4 ton capacity.) Helping your lawn breathe is yet another reason to keep your lawn regularly aerated, fertilized, mowed and maintained

Lawns are dust busters, acting as natural filters removing pollutants, dust, and other particulates not only from the air, but from the water to the tune of 12 million tons annually.

Lawns keep you grounded. With as much as 90% of its weight in its roots, grass is about as efficient of an erosion control as there is. Dethatching, overseeding, aerration, and fertilizer applicaton programs are some of the services that can help keep grass’ roots strong.

Lawns add value. According to buyer surveys, landscaping and lawns that are well maintained add up to 15 percent to the value of a home. And according to a Gallup Survey, homeowners see lawn and landscaping improvements as adding value to their homes more than than any other. And that’s year another reason many people consider professional lawn care and landscape maintenance services.

Lawns are a good investment, with a recovery rate from 100% to 200% for lawn and landscaping improvements, compared to decks and patios with a 40% to 70% recovery rate.

Lawns help create memories and happiness. Of course, healthy lawns add so much more to our quality of life that can’t be measured, although studies have shown that hospital patients with a view of lawns and the sky healed more quickly than those without. And, there’s probably few among us who don’t remember running barefoot and rolling around on our lawns, whether it was yesterday or 30 years ago.

At Meadows Lawn Care, we’re always ready to give you more time to enjoy running barefoot through the grass while we keep that grass as healthy and as green as green can be.

So one day when he cam home from work, he found her sitting in the front yard, scissors in hand busily snipping away at the grass. The husband stood and watched for a while without saying anything, and then hung his head and walked into the house, only to return a few minutes later.

“Here,” he said, handing a toothbrush to his wife. “You’ll probably want to sweep the sidewalk after you finish mowing the grass.

Doctors say he’ll be OK, though he may walk funny the rest of his life (or was that sing funny?)
